Two of Hasbro’s top-selling toy lines will be united onscreen in a crossover film starring the Transformers and GI Joe franchises
A movie crossover between Transformers and GI Joe has been discussed for a very long time. We first learned about it in 2016, when Hasbro convened a writers’ room to brainstorm a cinematic future for its action-oriented toy series
Since both franchises have experienced declining popularity over the years, Hasbro and Paramount seem to believe that teaming together to attempt and rekindle interest in both properties is as wise a move as any.
To be honest, crossover storylines have a long history in the Transformers and GI Joe comic book series. Fans loved the one from the 1980s, and a more recent story that paired the robot and human soldiers in a World War I scenario was also really fantastic.

Perhaps the idea will succeed if Paramount can bring in some of the essence of those books. However, there’s little question that Paramount believes that combining two dwindling properties will somehow help them both, given that the most recent releases in each series (Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts and Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins, respectively) made less money than the previous entry.
Given that Rise of the Beasts last year hinted at the crossover movie, this one has obviously been in the works for a while. The movie, which was revealed at CinemaCon (via Deadline), does not yet have a release date.
Regarding Transformers, the animated picture Transformers One, which stars Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry as younger versions of Optimus Prime and Megatron, respectively. It’s a September release for that movie.
In other Transformers news, plans have been revealed for 40th anniversary screenings of the beloved 1980s programme to take place in theatres next month. If you enjoy the Robots in Disguise, be sure to keep an eye out for that one as well. As more information on this crossover project becomes available, we’ll keep you updated.
